Cyberbullying: Why Online Harm Feels Easy

Among the dangers of algorithm-driven online interaction, one of the most widespread and damaging is cyberbullying. Children and teenagers are just as likely — and often even more likely — than adults to become targets. Their still-developing sense of judgment, boundaries, and emotional resilience makes them especially vulnerable to the pressure and harm of online behaviour.

Unfortunately, cyberbullying is extremely common.

A 2022 review by the Pew Research Center found that 46% of U.S. teenagers have experienced at least one recognised form of online harassment. This can include:

- Offensive name-calling
- Spreading false rumours
- Receiving unwanted explicit images
- Being pressured for constant updates on their activities
- Physical threats
- Having explicit images shared without consent

Algorithms amplify these behaviours by constantly surfacing provocative, emotional, or high-engagement content — even when it harms real people. Behind a screen, it becomes easier to dehumanise others, reducing them to a username and profile picture. Public shaming can escalate rapidly, turning small mistakes or misunderstandings into large-scale harassment campaigns.

Motivations vary: a desire for power, a sense of anonymity, peer pressure, or even simple boredom. Regardless of the reason, the impact on young people can be profound.

Children and teens need guidance not only in empathy — recognising the human being behind every profile — but also in understanding what behaviour is unacceptable online, what content can be reported, and how to seek help when something feels wrong. Most importantly, they must learn that no one deserves targeted hate, no matter who they are or what they may have done.

At ABI School, we believe that bullying of any kind is never acceptable. Every child deserves safety, both online and offline. We teach clear behavioural expectations, online etiquette, and practical strategies for digital self-protection. With this foundation, students grow into informed, ethical, empathetic individuals empowered to protect themselves and others.
