📢 France is facing a major nationwide strike today — and education is at the center of it.
Transport, administration, health services, and public schools are all heavily impacted as public-sector unions protest the 2026 government budget, unveiled on October 14th. The proposed plan includes significant cuts and the elimination of thousands of jobs, sparking strong national pushback.
The main education unions — SNES-FSU, CGT-FERC, and FSU-SNUipp — are calling for urgent changes, including:
❌ Cancelling the elimination of 4,000 teaching positions (and the Senate’s proposal to double that number).
📉 Reversing the 1.4% decrease (with inflation) in the national education budget.
♿ Better conditions for AESH staff supporting students with disabilities: higher salaries and more positions to ensure inclusive learning.
🏫 Dedicated investment to improve school working and learning environments.
✊ An end to austerity measures, replaced with real commitments to social, fiscal, and environmental justice.
Other concerns include the high student-to-teacher ratio in French public schools (18.2 vs. the EU average of 13.3) and the elimination of housing aid (APL) for international students.
At ABI School, we recognise the urgency of reform and the importance of equity, accessibility, and sustainability in education. These are values we actively uphold in our classrooms and within our team. As a private institution, however, our operations are not affected by today’s strike.
